Pet Safety

Smart pet gadgets are conveniences, not caretakers. They are not medical devices, and an app alert or a reading from a tracker does not replace a veterinarian. If your pet stops eating or drinking, strains in the litter box, or acts unwell, call your vet.

Any device that runs on Wi-Fi or wall power can fail. Feeders can jam or lose power, so keep a backup plan and have someone check on your pet when you are away for more than a short time. Keep power cords out of reach of chewers, follow the maker's charging directions for battery devices, and stop using anything with a damaged cord or battery.

A GPS tracker and a virtual fence do not contain a pet and do not guarantee that a lost pet will be found. Keep real fences, gates, collars and ID in place. Check the size and weight limits on self-cleaning litter boxes, supervise a pet's first uses, and unplug the unit before cleaning. Wash water fountains and bowls often, and count camera treats as part of your pet's daily food. Secure pet cameras with a strong password, and remember that they can record people as well as animals.
